Duke Blanks Hawai`i, 2-0

Box Score

WAIPAHU - Nationally ranked Duke displayed an impressive performance on both ends of the field to defeat Hawai`i, 2-0, on the opening night of the Outrigger Hotel's & Resorts Soccer Classic at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 3-2-1 while Duke improved to 3-2.

UH came into the contest with plenty of momentum coming off three straight road wins but could not solve the Blue Devils, a team ranked 18th by Soccer Times and 30th by Soccer Buzz. Duke out-shot Hawai`i 18-8 and provided a victorious homecoming for Allison Lipsher, a Punahou graduate and former state player of the year. Lipsher found herself unchallenged for much of the game as the Blue Devil defense limited UH to just one shot on goal.

Duke got on the board late in the first half when Shelly Marshall scored on a rebound in the 43rd minute. The play was initialized by midfielder Darby Kroyer who send a rocket of a shot from 20 yards out. Mahie Atay blocked the first shot, then blocked a rebound shot by Carolyn Riggs, before Kroyer finished the play off.

The Blue Devils got an insurance goal in the 77th minute when Kate Seibert dribbled up the field uncontested and fed a through ball to Sarah McCabe. McCabe send a left-footed shot past UH goalkeeper Erin Chow, who replaced an injured Atay at halftime.

The Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic continues Saturday night as Duke takes on Long Beach State at 7 p.m. Hawaii and Long Beach State wrap up the tournament Monday at 5 p.m. at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
