WAIPAHU, HI--Hawai`i played its first overtime match of the season, ending with a 1-1 tie with Pacific on the final evening OHANA Hotels & Resort No Ka Oi at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Both team's records moved to 0-1-1.
The Rainbow Wahine were staring at their second straight loss to open the season when Pacific scored five minutes into the second half. Maggie Barsotti received a pass from Carmen Padilla and fired a shot from 10 yards out to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead at the 50:21 mark. Barsotti's goal came after a first half in which the Rainbow Wahine out-shot the Tigers, 11-2.
UH, however, got the equalizer 15 minutes later. Robyn deHay, who sat out the season opener Friday due to a red card incurred in the 2003 finale, came off the bench to score the team's first goal of the season. The senior from Haleiwa, Oahu, received the ball inside midfield, then raced between two defenders to score on a breakaway in the 66th minute.
The teams then played 45 minutes of scoreless soccer, including a pair of overtime periods. UH out-shot the Pacific, 21-11 as Rainbow Wahine Natasha Kai finished with a game-high seven shots. Tiger goalkeeper Jamie Souza had a busy evening with seven saves.
UH next heads to the road for a three-game Southern California swing. The Rainbow Wahine will play three non-conference matches, starting Wednesday, September 1 vs. Santa Barbara at 7 p.m.
