SAN JOSE, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i softball team closed out the 2004 campaign this afternoon spliting a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader with San Jose State. The Spartans took the opener, 5-1, before the Rainbow Wahine took the nightcap, 3-1.

Both games were filled with errors as the two teams combined for five errors in each game, seven total by UH. In game one, the Spartans scored first in the bottom of the first inning. Courtney Lewis walked to start the inning, moved to second on a Danielle Eakins sacrifice, went to third on an Elisa Barrios single to right field, and scored on a Paula Blanning wild pitch. Barrios advanced to second on the wild pitch and to third on an error by catcher Denise Dahlberg who overthrew home plate when Lewis scored. Barrios eventually scored on another wild pitch that walked Lindsey Allen.

Hawai`i scored its run in the top of the fifth inning as Tara Harbert singled to the pitcher. With two outs, she scored on an April Crowell single to center field and an error by Lewis. The Rainbow Wahine left two runners on base that inning and 10 for the game.

The Spartans responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lewis doubled down the left field line and scored as pinch-hitter Michelle Newbold singled up the middle. Newbold scored as Allen reached base on a throwing error by shortstop Ashley Ruff. Erin Horiuchi pinch-ran for Allen and scored on a Carlie Hill single to left field.

SJSU's Kelli McCollister struck out four, including the side in the second inning, and allowed seven hits and one unearned runs as she improved to 6-11 record on the season. Paula Blanning (1-4) suffered the setback.

Game two started with neither team scoring until the fourth inning. Ruff hit a one-out single, reached second on a fielder's choice, stole third base, and advanced home as Spartan catcher Monique Kelley threw the ball into left field.

San Jose State responded in the bottom of the inning as Heather Lopez reached on a fielding error by Harbert. Horiuchi pinch-ran for Lopez and scored on a Kelley double to center field.

Both teams played close the next two innings before Hawai`i's bats broke loose in the seventh inning. Tracie Uchima hit a two-out single to right field that scored Marie Jackson and Dahlberg. However, Uchima's bid for a double was stopped as right fielder Jana Arde threw the ball in quickly and caused a rundown to get Uchima out.

The Spartans got a base runner in the seventh as Arde was hit by a Melissa Coogan pitch. But San Jose State could not move her off first base as Lewis grounded out to Coogan to end the inning. Coogan recorded the win with three innings of relief work. She replaced Shannon Tabion in the fifth inning.

Spartan pitcher Carol Forbes pitched a complete game in the loss. Her record falls to 9-18 on the season. She struck out three and did not walk a batter.

San Jose State is now 16-33 overall and 9-11 in the WAC, while Hawai`i finishes its season at 28-33 overall and 10-14 in the WAC.
