HOUSTON, Texas - The Hawai'i men's tennis team concluded its season under new head coach
John Nelson with a 4-0 loss to No. 42 Boise State, Friday afternoon, in the quarterfinals of the 2004 Western Athletic Conference Championships, at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium. The Rainbow Warriors finish their season with an 8-15 mark.
Hawai`i was seeded sixth in the seven-team tournament, hosted by Rice University. The Rainbow Warriors dropped the doubles point after losing all three positions. Boise State then captured the Nos. 1, 4, and 6 singles spots for the four points needed for victory.
The team of Dalibor Ptak and Ryan Sceats dropped their doubles match to Guillaume Bouvier and Thomas Schoeck, 8-5 at the No. 1 court, snapping a six-match win streak.
In singles competition, Ptak dropped a close decision to Bouvier at top position, 7-6 (6), 6-4. Ptak had set point in the first game but could not pull out the upset over the 52nd-ranked singles player. The Broncos, which featured three singles players ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings, extended its win streak to 12 matches.
"I'm proud of my guys, they kept their heads up and competed against the defending champs," Nelson said. "They've come a long way since the start of the season and we'll just have to keep raising the bar next season. We've improved tremendously and are moving in the right direction. I'll expect more and more from this group in the future."
