WAIPAHU - The Hawai'i men's tennis team concluded its regular season home schedule with a 7-0 loss to inner-city rival, Hawai'i Pacific, the top-ranked team in NCAA Division II, Friday afternoon, at the Central Oahu Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Warriors, who earlier this week lost to the top-ranked NAIA team, Azusa Pacific, dropped to 8-14 on the year.

HPU posted its fifth consecutive victory over Hawai`i in the friendly series by winning all six singles matches and two of the three doubles contests, which earned them the doubles point. The Sea Warriors improved to a perfect 21-0.

Hawai`i stayed close with HPU in the doubles matches by winning the No. 1 court as Dalibor Ptak and Ryan Sceats defeated Mikael Maatta and Gabor Jaross, 8-4. But the Sea Warriors responded by taking the next two courts as Sasa Pirc and Matey Pampulov edged Bryon Weinberg and Derrick Lajola, 8-6 at No. 2 and Moritz Szelzki and Christian Lindberg teamed up to beat Jarrod Diepraam and Burke Marold, 8-5 at No. 3.

It was all HPU in the singles matches five of the six matches were decided in straight sets. Sceats lost a highly competitive match, which featured a marathon second set tie-break, to Maatta at the No. 2 court but fell, 6-4, 7-6 (12). Weinberg extended his match with Jaross to a third set but lost the super-tiebreaker, 6-1, 3-6, (10-7).

The Rainbow Warriors take the next two weeks off in preparation for the 2004 Western Athletic Conference Championships, April 30-May 2, in Houston, Texas. Defending WAC champions Rice will serve as hosts.
