HONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i eliminated Southern Illinois today, 1-0, in the 4th Kipa Aloha Malihini Tournament at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. With the victory, UH advances to the 4 p.m. to take on Long Beach State for the tournament championship.
Hawai'i improves to 15-12 on the season and 6-2 in the tourney. Southern Illinois falls to 12-6 and 3-4 in the tourney.
The Rainbow Wahine, the designated visitors, scored in the fifth inning off SIU starter Alison Thompson (1-2) when Stacey Ritter led off with a double to center, went to third on Ashley Ruff's sacrifice bunt, and scored on Marie Jackson's single up the middle.
UH's Melissa Coogan (5-8) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before SIU shortstop Jenny Doehring lined a 1-2 pitch into centerfield for the Salukis first and only base hit of the game. Coogan finished the game with six strikeouts and no walks.
Hawai'i hosts Southern Illinois one game on Tuesday, March 9, beginning at 5 p.m. at the RWSS.
