HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i baseball team ended a five-day stretch with a 7-3 upset over No. 20 Oregon State to capture the First Hawai`i Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament championship before 2,702 Saturday night at the Les Murakami Stadium.
Clary Carlsen gave up three runs and spread nine hits and added seven strikeouts in the winning effort. Darrell Fisherbaugh earned the save with a one-hit effort and struck out five, including the last three Oregon State batters to end the game.
Oregon State took an early lead when Jacoby Ellsbury scored due to a Rainbow error after leading of with a single.
Hawai`i took the lead in the first off a two-run jack by Jaziel Mendoza. Then, after scoring a run and two outs with the bases loaded in the second, Rocky Russo hit a grounder to third and Beaver first baseman Scott Nelson mishandled the throw allowing three runs to score making it 6-1.
The teams traded runs in the fourth and Oregon State added another in the sixth to make it 7-3. The Beavers loaded the bases with two out in the eighth, but Fisherbaugh struck out Oregon State catcher Paul Richie to end any hope of a rally.
Hawai`i placed seven players on the all-tournament team, including Rickey Bauer who was named Most Outstanding Pitcher and third baseman Rocky Russo who earned Most Outstanding player honors. Other Rainbows on the all-tourney team include first baseman Andrew Sansaver, outfielder Greg Kish, catcher Matt Inouye, and pitcher Steven Wright.
Other players on the all-tournament team include: Chip Cannon (Citadel), Chris Kunda (Oregon State), Shea McFeely (Oregon State), Josh Stackley (Citadel), Jacoby Ellsbury (Oregon State), and Jonathan Ellis (Citadel).
The Rainbows will play Hawaii Pacific on March 13 before beginning the Western Athletic Conference season at Rice on March 19. First pitch against the Sea Warriors is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium..
