Northridge, CA –Chapter two of Hawai`i v. Northridge did not end well, the Warriors who lost the first match of the series 1-3, struggled early in Friday's match and never recovered again dropping the match, 1-3. The Warriors are now 0-2 on their current road trip, 11-5 overall and 8-4 in the MPSF, while Northridge improves to 13-6 and 8-5 MPSF.
Delano Thomas led the Warriors in Friday night's loss, putting down 16 kills and serving up three aces. The Warriors had a season high 10 aces for the match, including three from reserve Arri Jeschke. Sophomore Pedro Azenha racked up 14 kills for the Warriors as well as an ace of his own. Freshman Brian Beckwith struggled early in the match and was replaced by veteran setter Kimo Tuyay who dished out 41 assists for the night. Joshua Stanhiser led the Warrior defense with seven blocks.
In a repeat of the Warriors last loss to the Matadors, the squad struggled in game one, hitting just .108 as the Matadors dominated on their home turf. Dan Rhodes led Northridge in game one, eventually hitting putting down 19 kills. As the Warriors tried to put something together the Matadors ran past them taking game one 30-24.
Game two witnessed more of the same as Northridge continued its domination and the Warriors continued to struggle. Hawai`i took their first lead of the night at 18-17 but the Matadors quickly snatched it back. The Warriors caught up to the Matadors at 28-all but failed to produce a win, dropping to 0-2 in the match after losing game two 30-28.
The Warriors desperate to stay in the match found their rhythm in game three. They kept it even to start the game but took their largest lead of match at 26-14, when Tuyay served up six straight points and the Matadors struggled. The Warriors allowed Northridge only four more points before winning game three 30-18.
In game four Hawai`i continued to challenge the Matadors dominance, taking an early 4-1 lead. ButNorthridge answered back to bring the game to even at twelve and eventually took the lead leaving the Warriors to play catch up. The Warriors managed to even the score at 25-all, but the Matadors only gave up three more points before taking the game 30-28 and the match.
The Warriors move on to play USC in a two-match series, March 8 and 9 before heading back home to prepare for two upcoming matches versus BYU.
