Matt Bender had a team high 25 kills and
Ryan Woodward put down a career high 18, but the fifth-ranked Warriors could not contain the top-ranked California Baptist University Lancers of the NAIA. The Lancers snatched a 3-2 (23-30, 33-31, 30-28, 22-30, 15-10) win from Hawai`i, giving them their 17th consecutive win. The Warriors are now 13-8, 10-6 overall on the season.
In addition to Bender's 25 and Woodward's 18 kills, middle blocker Joshua Stanhiser knocked down 10 and also had six blocks for the night. Bender recorded seven blocks and seven digs in addition to his kills; while Woodward added five blocks and five digs. Senior Kimo Tuyay dished up 58 assists and libero Alfred Reft had 12 digs for the night.
The Lancers kept the score close in the first half of game one until the Warriors went on a 4-0 run to give them a 17-14 advantage. At 24-20, Bender served for three straight points to give the Warriors a comfortable 27-20 lead. California Baptist would be allowed only three more points before Hawai`i took game one, 30-23 off a kill from Delano Thomas.
In game two the Lancers continued to keep the score close as Hawai`i tried to capitalize on their winning momentum from game one. By mid game the Warriors led by four, but California Baptist soon caught up on a pair of Warrior hitting errors. Errors continued to plague Hawai`i as the game was pushed to extra points and eventually won by the Lancers, 33-31.
Game three saw a confident Lancer squad that snatched control of the match from the Warriors and held them to a .167 hitting percentage for the game. At 14-15, California Baptist went on a 4-0 run to leave the Warriors to play catch up. The Warriors came back to within one after a kill from Woodward, but Shaun Dyk ended the game, 30-28 with a kill of his own. Dyk would go on to have a team high 19 kills for the game.
The Warriors came on strong in game four but the Lancers continued to keep things close for much of the game, until kills from Bender, Woodward and Stanhiser pushed the momentum the Warriors way. At 22-26 the Warriors enjoyed a 4-0 run to give them a 30-22 game four victory.
In game five the both teams struggled to gain an advantage over the other. A kill from Tuyay would even the score at 10-all, but the Lancers would go on to win the next five points and the match.
The Warriors will have another chance to end the Lancers streak tomorrow night at 7:00pm at the Stan Sheriff Center.
