WAIPAHU - The Hawai'i men's tennis team got off to a great start in doubles play but could not carry that over to singles competition in its 5-2 loss to Southwest Missouri State, Friday, at the Central Oahu Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Warriors fell to 6-12 on the year.
Hawai'i took the tightly-contested doubles point after winning the Nos. 1 and 3 positions. It marked just the third time all season that SMS lost the doubles point. At the No. 1 court, the team of Dalibor Ptak and Ryan Sceats held on for a 9-7 victory over Pavel Hanek and Jiri Spousta. UH took the point when Jarrod Diepraam and Burke Marold out-lasted Rishi Garbharran and Predrag Pavlicic, 8-6, at No. 3.
The Bears turned things around by sweeping the Nos. 3-6 positions. UH's Sceats was the only player to win his match, escaping with a 7-6 (4), 0-6, (17-15) victory over Spousta at the No. 1 court. Ptak lost a three-setter to Hanek, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, at No. 2.
The Rainbow Warriors return to the court against Sonoma State, April 3, at the Central Oahu Tennis Complex.
