RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Hawai'i men's tennis team escaped with a 4-3 victory over UC Riverside, Sunday, at the UCR Student Recreation Center. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 5-10 on the year and 2-0 on its current five-match/seven-day road trip.
Hawai'i got off to a 1-0 lead after winning two of the three doubles contests. The team of Dalibor Ptak and Ryan Sceats beat Mark Contreras and Brent Davis, 8-6 at the top doubles spot. At the No. 3 court, Byron Weinberg and Derrick Lajola pulled out an 8-6 win over Giancarlo Cava and Jordan Leo.
The Warriors and Highlanders battled it out in singles competition as the teams split the six matches. After Lajola and senior Jarrod Diepraam won their matches, at No. 4 and 5, respectively, in straight sets, senior Sceats gave UH the deciding fourth point with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Contreras at the No. 2 court.
UH continues play at Azusa Pacific, Monday, at 2:00 p.m. PST.
