HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (7-5) picked up their 100th all-time win over their inter-island rival UH-Hilo (4-13) 15-3 in front of a crowd of 2,505 at the Les Murakami Stadium Saturday.
Stephen Bryant (1-0) got the win for the 'Bows, while Scott Siegfried (0-3) took the loss for the Vulcans.
Hawai`i picked up their sixth-straight win of the season and the 100th in the teams' 27-year history with one-another.
Matthew Inouye led the way for the 'Bows, going 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs. Andrew Sansaver came out of an early season slump with a 4-for-5 game with one RBI. Brian Finegan went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBI, while Daniel Magana went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs.
The Rainbows started it all off in the first inning as Creighton Kahoalii hit a grand-slam home run over the left field wall, giving the 'Bows a 4-0 lead. Finegan then drove in Robbie Wilder in the second to make it 5-0.
That was more than enough for Bryant, who gave up just one hit in six-plus innings, striking out five with three walks. Between the first and fifth innings, the junior retired 13-straight batters.
Hawai`i kept it going in the fifth and sixth innings, as Sansaver hit a run-scoring single in the fifth and Magana and Joshua Green hit RBI-singles while Gregory Kish scored on a passed ball in the sixth, making it 9-0.
The Vulcans got on the board in the seventh, scoring three runs. But the 'Bows came right back with another big inning, as Inouye's three-run homer highlighted a six-run seventh inning, making the final score 15-3.
The two teams will face off again tomorrow with Clary Carlsen (1-2) pitching against Brian Ebbs (0-1).
