HONOLULU - The No. 2 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (22-0, 12-0 WAC) swept through the San Jose State Spartans (14-12, 5-8) 30-18, 30-27 and 30-25 in front of a crowd of 7,321 at the Stan Sheriff Center Friday.
With the win, UH clinched their ninth-straight WAC title and their 10th-straight conference title overall.
Alicia Arnott led the way for the Rainbow Wahine with 19 kills, 10 digs, three blocks and two aces while hitting .368. Kanoe Kamana`o again had a great all-around match with 34 assists, 12 digs and four blocks in just two games played. Victoria Prince added 10 kills, six blocks and a .588 hitting percentage while Susie Boogaard had 13 kills, 10 digs and two aces. Kari Gregory and Juliana Sanders both played well in just one game each, as Gregory had four blocks while Sanders went for four kills, two blocks and a .571 hitting percentage. Ashley Watanabe came up with 16 digs in the back row while Tara Hittle had a good all-around match with nine kills, 10 digs and five assists.
Hawai`i jumped out quickly in game one as Arnott served five-straight points, including two big blocks by Gregory, putting the Rainbow Wahine up 7-2, forcing a SJSU timeout. The two teams traded points for a while until Arnott got back to serve again, serving UH for eight-straight points to make it 24-12. San Jose State came back with a 6-2 run to cut it to 26-18 before Boogaard capped a four-point run with an ace to give UH the 30-18 game one victory.
The Rainbow Wahine again came out and dominated early in the second game, getting out to a 13-7 advantage after six-straight points on the serve of Boogaard. The Spartans again stuck around for a while until a big 7-1 run on three kills by Sanders, two by Arnott and two by Boogaard, getting to game-point at 29-16. But then Jessie Shull and the Spartans made their run, as Shull served 11-straight points, cutting it to 29-27, before a kill by Arnott put it away 30-27.
UH then changed the lineup for the third game, putting in Cayley Thurlby at setter and senior Melody Eckmier at middle. Thurlby responded to her chance well, putting up 17 assists, seven digs and two blocks. After the Spartans kept it close for most of the game, before a late 5-1 run gave UH the 30-25 game three victory.
Hawai`i will close its home regular season schedule tomorrow vs. Nevada at 7 p.m. Tomorrow's match will also serve as senior night for Eckmier and Teisa Fotu, as both will be honored after the match.
