DALLAS - No. 21 SMU scored three goals in the second half to pull off a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Hawaii Friday night at the Westcott Field. With their first loss in eight matches, the Rainbow Wahine dropped to 9-3-2 overall and 2-1 in the WAC.
The Rainbow Wahine looked poised to pick up its first ever win over its conference nemesis by scoring the first two goals of the match. But in a tale of two halves, the Mustangs (7-2-2, 2-0-1 WAC) came out the aggressor after halftime and put together a flurry of three goals in an eight-minute span to steal the win.
The loss was UH's first on the road this season (5-1-1) and snapped its streaks for consecutive WAC regular season wins overall (7) and on the road (6). The team's five-match shutout streak also came to a halt. The Mustangs remain undefeated against the Rainbow Wahine in eight meetings (7-0-1).
The game was delayed 30 minutes due to a shortage of officials, but once it started UH and junior striker Natasha Kai wasted little time in pouncing on the Mustangs. Kai stole the ball on the SMU half of the field and fired a rocket from 25 yards out that found the upper left corner of the goal just 16 seconds in.
Kai would strike again in the 19th minute when she took a long ball from Seline Williams, maneuvered around three Mustang defenders and bended a left-footed shot from just inside the top of the box. The shot hit the inside of the far post and glided to the opposite side of the net for her 10th goal of the year, and first multiple-goal performance this year.
SMU, however, stormed back early in the second half. Kimber Bailey's header off a corner kick put the Mustangs on the board in the 52nd minute and a rebound goal by Kailua native Adria Campbell equalized the match less than five minutes later. The Mustangs capped their comeback at the 59:06 mark when Allison Brill floated a 30-yard shot over an outstretched Erin Chow.
The Rainbow Wahine next travel to El Paso where they will take on the UTEP Miners on Sunday, Oct. 10. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. MST.
