WAIPAHU - Hawai`i gave a commanding performance from start to finish in a 2-0 win over Tulsa Sunday night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The win improves the Rainbow Wahine to 9-2-2 overall and 2-0 in the WAC.
UH scored two first half goals, then put it in cruise control in the second half. Junior striker Natasha Kai had a part in both scoring strikes, tallying a goal and an assist to keep Hawai`i undefeated in its last seven matches. The undefeated streak tied a program record, while the team set a new school record with its fifth straight shutout.
After pressuring Tulsa for the first 25 minutes, including a Kai shot off the post, the Rainbow Wahine finally got on the board at the 29:19 mark. Joelle Sugai's cross from the left flank found a leaping Kai, who headed the ball into the upper left corner of the goal.
Senior Pam Fong put UH up 2-0 late in the half with her fist goal of the season. Fong entered the game in the 40th minute and promptly scored a goal two minutes later. Kai flicked a Jessica Uecker free kick to a streaking Fong in the box who hammered in her fifth career goal.
UH out-shot Tulsa 13-8 and did not allow a single shot on goal in the first half. Senior goalkeeper Erin Chow posted her third solo shutout this season and fourth victory against zero defeats.
The Rainbow Wahine next travel to Texas for a pair of WAC road games, starting with a date with rival SMU on Friday, Oct. 8. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. CST.
