SAN FRANCISCO - Hawaii concluded its regular season schedule with a 1-0 loss to San Francisco Tuesday night at Negoesco Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine finished it three-match California road swing with a 1-2 mark and now stand at 12-6-2 on the season.
The Dons (9-6-3) got the game-winner in the 53rd minute when Hillary Fisher sent a through ball to Stephanie Gray who finished the play with a shot inside the near post from 10 yards out. USF nearly struck again two minutes later but Chelsea Hunt's open-net header bounced off the post.
For the second match in a row, UH started with a 4-4-2 formation. In the first half, the Rainbow Wahine allowed just four shots for the Dons and none on goal. UH switched to its traditional 3-4-3 after USF's first goal, but were able to muster just two shots in the second half. The teams combined for just 15 shots total for the match. Hawaii's best chance to equalize came at the 65th minute on a header by Natasha Kai that sailed over the crossbar.
After its best ever start on the road with five straight wins, the Rainbow Wahine dropped four of its last five away matches. UH also remained winless against USF in eight all-time matches (0-6-2).
UH next hosts the 2004 WAC Championships, Nov. 4-6 at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine have completed conference play at 5-3 and await the rest of the schedule to play out to determine its seeding in next week's tournament. The winner of the WAC Championships earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
