Hawaii Drops Road Match at Fresno State

Box Score

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State scored a goal in each half to down Hawaii, 2-1, on a chilly Friday night at Bulldog Stadium. The loss, UH's third straight on the road, dropped the Rainbow Wahine to 11-5-2 overall and 4-3 in the WAC.

Fresno State (5-7-3, 2-2-2) jumped out of the gates quickly with a goal in the 11th minute off a corner kick. Cortney Sobrero received the corner near the top of the box and fired a shot that deflected off a UH defender. The ball trickled to a nearby Andrea Alires who fired a shot that went over the outreached arm of goalkeeper Erin Chow and grazed off the inside of the crossbar.

The Bulldogs tacked on an insurance goal at the 65:18 mark when Sobrero moved unimpeded up the middle, slid a pass to Barbara Davis in the box, who then fed a streaking Antoneo Lugo up the gut.

UH's best chance came in the second half after trailing 2-0, Koren Takeyama found herself in a one-one-one situation with Fresno State goalie Jeannette Paine, but was unable to get a shot off. For the game the Rainbow Wahine out-shot the Bulldogs, 10-9, however the Bulldogs limited star striker Natasha Kai to just three shots, and just one on goal.

The match marked just the fourth time that UH has been shutout in 18 matches this year. It also marked the first time UH has been shutout in a WAC regular-season contest since a 4-0 loss at SMU in 2002, a string of 18 consecutive matches.

UH concludes its WAC regular season schedule with a match at San Jose State Sunday, October 24. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. PDT.
