SAN DIEGO - The Hawai'i women's tennis team opened play at the Wilson/ITA Western Regional at the Barnes Tennis Center with eight singles players and four doubles teams competing in Qualifying Round matches. Senior Kimberly Curtis won both of her matches, Thursday, to earn a spot in the 64-player Main Draw on Friday.

Curtis defeated UCLA's Amber Ray in the first round 6-0, 6-1, and outlasted Leslie Damion of UC Santa Barbara, 6-2, 3-6, (12-10), to become the only Rainbow Wahine to advance to the Main Draw. UH's seven other singles players failed to win their first round matches. However, freshman Julia Sandborn won her Feed In match, 8-5, over Pepperdine's Vanessa Dunlap.

In doubles competition, the team of Lauren Fitzgerald and Paige Mainor defeated Nicoletta Ratiu/Rachael Porsz of Long Beach State, 8-4, before falling to UCLA's Elizabeth Lumpkin/Anya Loncaric, 8-6. Sandborn teamed with fellow freshman Chloe Bihag and won their first match in a walkover against Northern Arizona's Nienke Van Beest/Lindsay Villegas. In their second round match, Chelsea Glynn and former Rainbow Wahine Mio Fukushima defeated Sandborn/Bihag, 8-1.

Curtis will face UNLV's Cindy Trebor in her Round of 64 match beginning at 9:00 a.m. PST. The rest of the Rainbow Wahine will place Back Draw matches on Friday.
