HONOLULU - The No. 4 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (14-0, 4-0 WAC) swept the UTEP Miners (6-9, 0-6) 30-18, 30-14 and 30-21 in front crowd of 6,696 on Kid's Day at the Stan Sheriff Center Sunday.
Victoria Prince had another solid match, putting away nine kills and nine blocks (tying the rally-scoring record for blocks in a three-game match) in just two games while hitting .692. Tara Hittle continued to impress with 11 kills and a career-high 15 digs while hitting .429. Susie Boogaard added 10 kills and eight digs while Kanoe Kamana`o came up with 25 assists and five blocks in just two games. Alicia Arnott opened the first game with two aces to start the Rainbow Wahine off to a 7-2 lead. Hawai`i got it up to 13-5 before the Miners responded with a 4-0 run, cutting the deficit to four points at 13-9. Arnott again stepped back to serve at 14-10, reeling off six-straight points, including two more aces, pushing the advantage to 20-10. In all, the Rainbow Wahine accumulated six aces in game one, taking the game 30-18.
Hawai`i kept it going at the start of the second game, jumping out to a 9-3 edge. UTEP was able to pull within two points at 12-10, but UH came right back, rattling off an 8-2 run to make it 20-11, forcing a Miner timeout. The Rainbow Wahine continued to roll as Prince's ninth kill put away game two, 30-14.
With an adjusted UH lineup that included Cayley Thurlby at setter, Raeceen Woolford at libero, game three started out tight with Hawai`i holding a slight 15-14 lead at the media timeout. UTEP was able to take the lead at 20-19, but the Rainbow Wahine responded, closing out the match on an 11-1 run, taking the third game 30-21.
The Rainbow Wahine will next head on the road to face Louisiana Tech on Oct. 14 in Ruston, La., and SMU in Dallas on Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
