Longhorns Too Much for Rainbow Warriors

WAIKALOA, Hawai`i - The Hawai`i men's tennis team opened its spring season with a 7-0 loss to Texas, Monday, at the Waikaloa Resort on the Big Island. The Longhorns, who finished No. 13 in the last year's ITA national rankings, swept all six singles and three doubles matches.

The Rainbow Warriors (0-2) provided little resistance in its first competition since a 5-2 loss to No. 3 Stanford in November. Sophomore Bryon Weinberg nearly pulled off the upset of Ryan Haymond at No. 3 singles, falling 7-6, 6-4.

"Our team competed well today," first-year head coach John Nelson said. "Texas is an outstanding team and we're looking forward to learning from our experience today. Our squad is willing and ready to improve and hopefully provide a better challenge the rest of the week."

The Rainbow Warriors are spending the rest of the week in Waikaloa. The team will face Western Athletic Conference foe Rice, Jan. 6, and William & Mary, Jan. 10. From Jan. 7-9, the team will split up and compete in a Flight Tournament, which features players from the four different schools.
