Tulsa Pulls Away From Hawaii, 63-55

Box Score

HONOLULU--In a see-saw battle, Tulsa used a 16-8 run in the final six minutes of the game to come away with a 63-55 win over Hawaii Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Redshirt freshman Jillian Robbins scored 22 points to give the Golden Hurricane its fourth win in a row, while handing the Rainbow Wahine (5-13, 3-6) its second straight loss.

Robbins scored the first eight points for the Golden Hurricane (13-6, 6-3 WAC) before sitting out the majority of the first half due to foul trouble. The 6-1 forward, however ignited Tulsa's final push with a layup and foul that broke a 47-47 tie. The Golden Hurricane would not trail again as Robbins scored six points during the final run.

The Rainbow Wahine relied on their usual tenacious defense to hold the Golden Hurricane to 36 percent from the field, including only one 3-point basket. Tulsa, however, made 28 trips to the free throw line, the most by an opponent this year, and converted 22 of those attempts. The Golden Hurricane also out-rebounded UH, 42-37.

Three players scored in double figures for UH, led by April Atuaia with 13 points. Jade Abele finished with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while Janevia Taylor added 10. Emily Jaskowiak had a double-double for Tulsa with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

UH led by as many as six points in the first half and the game was knotted 31-31 going into the locker room. The Rainbow Wahine, however, scored just two points in the first six minutes of the second half as Tulsa built an eight-point lead, 40-32. UH answered with a 11-2 run and took the lead, 43-42, with a Taylor field goal just inside the 3-point line midway through the second half. But just as their loss to Rice two nights prior, the Rainbow Wahine could not seal the deal, shooting just 29 percent in the second half.

The Rainbow Wahine conclude their three-game homestand when they face San Jose State on Friday, February 6. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
