HONOLULU--Hawaii showed plenty of moxie, but it wasn't enough to contend with No. 12 Louisiana Tech in 67-50 loss Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Wahine, who remain winless against the Lady Techsters in 12 games, dropped to 4-10 overall and 2-3 in the WAC.
The game had all the signs of a classic blowout early on before the Rainbow Wahine regrouped and made the game a battle late in the first half. The Lady Techsters (12-2, 5-1 WAC), however, would separate themselves in the second half to stay on top of the conference standings and win for the 46th time in 48 WAC contests.
Janevia Taylor gave a gritty performance for the Rainbow Wahine, scoring 11 of her career-high 16 points in the first half before leaving the game midway through the second half with a strained back. Jade Abele added 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Amber Obaze led three Lady Techsters in double-digits with a career-high 23 points.
The Rainbow Wahine got off to a dreadful start. UH committed five turnovers on its first six possessions, scored just one field goal in the game's first 11 minutes and quickly fell in a deep hole. After falling behind, 25-7, the Rainbow Wahine started to show signs of life behind the play of Taylor. UH scored nine straight points, cutting the lead to single digits and forcing a frustrated Louisiana Tech squad to call timeout. Taylor's 3-point play moments later cut La Tech's lead to eight points late in the half.
That's as close as it would get though as the Lady Techsters pushed their advantage to 33-21 at the break and began to coast after a 16-5 run to start the second half. Louisiana Tech shot 47 percent in the second half and out-rebounded UH, 26-11, as their lead ballooned to 27 points.
UH shot 30 percent for the game, while Louisiana Tech's suffocating defense forced UH to commit a season-high 23 turnovers.
The Rainbow Wahine will next take its second road trip of the season and will face UTEP on Thursday, January 22. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m. MST.
