HONOLULU--Hawaii snapped a two-game losing streak with a convincing 67-50 win over SMU Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 4-9 overall and 2-2 in the WAC.
Playing their first home game in more than three weeks, UH came out an energized squad. The Rainbow Wahine looked crisp on offense, played solid defense and hustled their way to their fourth win of the season, giving head coach Vince Goo a memorable birthday gift. UH improved to a perfect 8-0 over SMU at home and ended the Mustang's (7-7, 3-2) current three-game win streak.
Jade Abele scored a game-high 22 points and added four assists to lead the Rainbow Wahine, Dalia Solia added 11 points, while Janevia Taylor and April Atuaia had nine points each. Eight of the nine players who saw action for UH scored.
Hawaii scored the first seven points of the game, went through a brief cold spell, but then took control of the game midway through the first half. Hawaii led by as many as 15 in the first half and held a 34-21 lead at the break.
SMU made one push in the second half. After UH extended its lead to 17 points on its second possession, the Mustangs scored nine straight to cut the lead to 38-30. The Rainbow Wahine answered with six straight points and maintained a double-digit through the final 16-plus minutes of the game.
Hawaii finished the game shooting 41 percent to SMU's 29 percent. The Mustangs made just 6-of-25 on 3-pointers and were out-rebounded 46-42. Brittany Grice led UH with a career-high nine rebounds.
UH next takes on 12th-ranked Louisiana Tech on Saturday, January 17. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
