WAIKOLOA, Hawai`i - The Hawai`i men's tennis team capped its weeklong stay on the Big Island with a 6-1 setback to William & Mary, Saturday, at the Hilton Waikoloa Resort. The Rainbow Warriors dropped its fourth match of the season, all to ranked opponents, including losses to Texas and Rice earlier this week.
William & Mary, who finished last season No. 51 in the final ITA national rankings, took the early 1-0 lead after winning the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. In singles action, the Rainbow Warriors captured the No. 2 court, with sophomore Ryan Sceats defeating Sean Kelleher, 6-4, 6-3.
Newcomer Dalibor Ptak, playing at the No. 1 court for the first time this season, took Jeff Kader to three sets, before falling, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3. Last season, Kader finished No. 91 nationally. Senior Jarrod Diepraam also extended his match to the decisive third set, but lost 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 to Stephen Ward.
The Rainbow Warriors (0-4) take the next two weeks off before a weeklong road trip through California and Nevada.
