RIVERSIDE, Calif--Hawaii concluded its Southern California road swing with a 2-2 double-overtime tie with UC Riverside Monday afternoon at UCR Lower Fields. Playing their third match in four days, the Rainbow Wahine (3-1-1) showed grit in the match, yet were unable to hold on to an early two-goal lead.
The match was full of offensive fireworks. The teams combined for 51 shots, including 30 by UC Riverside (2-1-1). The Rainbow Wahine got off to a fast start scoring two goals in the first 27 minutes. But Riverside game back with goals in the 37th and 64th minute.
Mahie Atay was tested all day and finished the match with eight saves. A Highlanders goal late in the first half, broke a streak of 300-plus shutout minutes for the Rainbow Wahine.
Natasha Kai got UH on the board just 12 minutes into the match. Arlene Devitt gave a through ball up the middle for Kai who sprinted past her defender and nailed a seven-yard shot in the left side of the net. Devitt got a goal of her own less than 15 minutes later when she found some free space near the top of the 18-yard box and fired a right-footed rocket into the upper right corner of the goal.
The Highlanders didn't quit though and Kelly Ferguson's breakaway goal with eight minutes left in the first half, cut the deficit to 2-1. UCR knotted the score in the 64th minute on Kristi Tanaka's free kick from 21 yards out. A diving Atay got a hand on the low-flying ball as it ricochet off the inside of the left post into the side of the goal.
Both teams had numerous opportunities to win the match in the ensuing 45 minutes of regulation and overtime play. Devitt created a breakaway in the final minute of regulation, but was tackled just inside the box to thwart a match-winning attempt.
UH returns home to host the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic, September 12-14. The Rainbow Wahine will face Utah Valley State on Saturday (7 p.m.) and Morehead State on Sunday (5 p.m).
