LONG BEACH, Calif--The University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine soccer team won its third straight match and second straight on the road with a 1-0 win over Long Beach State at George Allen field. The Rainbow Wahine scored midway through the first half then withstood a desperate attack by the 49ers in the final minutes as UH improved to 3-1 on the season.
The winless 49ers (0-4) mounted early pressure on the Rainbow Wahine and out-shot UH, 7-4, in the first half. But Hawaii controlled the midfield for nearly the entire match and senior Mia Moe helped UH get on the scoreboard by delivering a perfect pass to Robyn deHay for the match's only goal in the 25th minute. Moe lofted a diagonal pass from the right flank to deHay who beat her defender up the middle, dribbled the ball a few yards and nailed a right-footed straight-away shot from eight yards out. The Stanford transfer, who leads the team with four assists, scored her first career goal as a Rainbow Wahine.
UH continued to put the heat on LBSU in the second half. Natasha Kai launched three shots in the box during the second frame, including one that bounced off the crossbar in the 73rd minute. The 49ers made one last push late in the game. With five minutes remaining LBSU's Erin Empting fired a shot from 20 yards out on an empty goal, but the ball sailed high.
It is the third straight shutout for the Rainbow Wahine and sophomore goalkeeper Mahie Atay. UH has outscored its opponents 7-0 during its current three-match win streak. UH also extended the 49ers scoreless drought to more than 500 minutes, a streak of that dates back five-plus matches.
The game was marred with injury when Moe suffered a sprained left knee in the second half and her status is questionable for UH's next game.
UH concludes its three-match road swing through Southern California with a contest against UC Riverside on Monday. The match begins at 3 p.m. PST.
