HOUSTON-- The University of Hawaii Rainbow soccer team successfully opened the 2003 Western Athletic Conference season with a 2-0 win at Rice Friday night. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 6-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the WAC after a hard-fought battle with the Owls.
Senior forward Arlene Devitt proved the difference maker scoring both goals versus the air-tight defense of Rice. The first score came off a deflection in the game's 69th minute while the second was to the left from inside the goalkeeper's area in the 88th minute. It was the first time this year the Owls (2-5-1, 0-1 WAC) had allowed more than one goal in a game.
The multiple-goal performance was the 10th of Devitt's career. The Kapaa, Kauai native boosted her school career record total to 34 in scoring her fourth and fifth goals of the season.
The Owls took more shots (13-8) and more shots on goal (6-4), but Rainbow Wahine goalkeeper Mahie Atay was outstanding. The all-WAC sophomore made six saves to help record the team's fifth shutout of the season.
The Rainbow Wahine next travel to Tulsa to take on the Golden Hurricane in a WAC contest. The match begins at 2 p.m. CST.
