Kai, deHay Lead UH Past UVSU

WAIPAHU, Oahu - Behind the offensive attack of strikers Natasha Kai and Robyn deHay, the University of Hawai`i women's soccer team defeated Utah Valley State, 5-2, Saturday night on the second night of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic. The Rainbow Wahine improve to 4-1-1 and won for the fourth time in its last five matches.

Kai, the reigning Western Athletic Conference player of the year, posted her third career hat trick and first of the season. DeHay scored twice, including a well-executed header from a cross by junior Natalie Groenewoud in the 56th minute.

The Rainbow Wahine took a 3-0 lead into the half after scoring three times in the first 18:00 of the game. DeHay scored first for UH, a right-footed shot past the goalkeeper at the 3:40 mark. Kai took over with consecutive goals at the 14th and 18th minute. Her second goal was a header from a cross by junior Joelle Sugai.

Tempers flared during the 50th minute when yellow cards were handed out to UVSU's Megan Dickerson and UH's Kai. After cooler heads prevailed, DeHay answered with her second goal and Kai put the Rainbow Wahine ahead 5-0, with a right-footed shot after a through ball from Arlene Devitt.

With UH coach Pinsoom Tenzing emptying the bench, the Wolverines scored twice, in a 30-second span, during the 78th minute. Kaley Frederick scored just outside of the 18-yard box while Teryn Mendenhal converted a penalty kick.

The Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic concludes Sunday, when the Rainbow Wahine host Morehead State at 5:00 p.m.
