WAIPAHU, Oahu - The University of Hawai`i women's soccer team were overrun by Arizona State in their season opener 4-0, at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine were unable to convert on their 16 shot attempts in the first match of the OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Ka Oi.
The Sun Devils' Elizabeth Bogus supplied much of her team's offense, scoring on two goals on three shots. Bogus, the Pac-10's Freshman of the Year in 2002, scored the golden goal by controlling a throw in and beating her defender to slot a left-footed goal with 5:11 on the clock. The Hawai`i defense then clamped down allowing just four shots for the rest of the period. After leading just 1-0 to begin the second period, Arizona State showed why they were ranked 11th in the preseason by Soccer Buzz Magazine. Patrice Feulner scored off a cross by Levise Robertson just 2:55 into the period. Robertson was able to add a goal of her own on a breakaway a little less than four minutes later. Bogus scored off an assist by Courtney Crane at 73:54 to end the scoring.
The Rainbow Wahine were able to muster many scoring opportunities, but were unable to cash in. Sophomore Natasha Kai was the focal point of Hawai`i's scoring efforts, as she had eight shots, including three headers in a seven-minute span late in the match.
Hawai`i will regroup for its next match on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 5:00 p.m, when they face Bowling Green at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Ka Oi will continue Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. when Arizona State faces Bowling Green.
