SAN JOSE, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (29-25, 10-18 WAC) beat the San Jose State Spartans (24-31, 9-18 WAC) 5-4 in front of a crowd of 647 at the San Jose Municipal Stadium Friday. Clary Carlsen (3-3) picked up the win while Brandon Dewing took the loss for San Jose State.

It was UH's first win at San Jose State since 1998. Joshua Green went 1-for-3 with two RBI, a double and a run. Jaziel Mendoza led the team, going 3-for-4 with a double and a run.

The Spartans opened up hot, scoring three runs, highlighted by a two-run double by Markum King, in the bottom of the first. The Rainbows would respond in the top of the second, as Rocky Russo and Green would double in runs before Green would score on a passed ball, tying the game at 3-3.

Hawai`i would add another run in the top of the fifth when Andrew Sansaver would bring in Matthew Inouye, putting the 'Bows up 4-3.

The Spartans would tie the game in the bottom of the eighth as Jordan Bergstrom would hit a big home run over the left field wall.

But UH wasn't done, as Brian Bock would hit a triple off the top of the left field fence before Green would sacrifice fly him in, giving the 'Bows the 5-4 lead.

San Jose State would threaten in the bottom of the ninth, but the Rainbows would get Jon Heuerman out 8-4-5 after a double, killing the rally to take the game 5-4.

The two teams will play again tomorrow at 1 p.m. PDT, before finishing off both teams' seasons with a 12 noon game on Sunday. Christopher George is scheduled to pitch tomorrow for the 'Bows against SJSU's Matt Durkin.
