Sansaver Gives the Rainbows 3-2 Victory in the top of the 13th

Bauer Gets No-Decision in Dazzling Performance

Box Score

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (24-19, 6-13 WAC) defeated the San Jose State Spartans (20-22, 6-12 WAC) 3-2, on an Andrew Sansaver RBI-single in the 13th inning, in front of a crowd of 2,338 at the Les Murakami Stadium. Guy McDowell (1-0) got the win for UH while Jose Amaya (3-2) picked up the loss for the Spartans.

Ricky Bauer would have another great pitching performance, allowing just one run on three hits in 9.0 innings, striking out four while walking just one. Sansaver would lead the way for the 'Bows, going 1-for-6 with one run and the game-winning RBI. Isaac Omura added a 2-for-3 game while Russo was 1-for-4 with one RBI. Brian Finegan had his nine-game hitting streak snapped with an 0-for-6 night.

Neither team could get on the board early in the game as Bauer would pitch to the minimum amount of batters in the first five innings while Durkin held the Rainbows to just two hits in the same span.

Hawai`i finally broke through in the sixth inning as Cook got on base with a walk before Jaziel Mendoza's double to right-center field pushed the senior to third base. Russo then hit a fly ball to left field that was deep enough to score Cook, giving UH the first run of the game.

The Spartans would then come back to manufacture a run of their own, scoring on a 4-3 groundout in the top of the eighth, tying the game a 1-1.

UH would threaten in the bottom of the ninth as Brian Bock would hit a pinch-hit single to get runners on second and third with one out. But the Spartans would shut down the rally, recording two straight outs to send the game to extra innings.

San Jose State catcher Nick Guerra then came up in the top of the tenth and hit a lead-off home run over the right field fence, giving the Spartans the 2-1 advantage.

Hawai`i would come back in the bottom of the 10th as Schafer Magana would walk in the tying run, leaving the bases loaded with just one out. But San Jose State again had the answer, turning a 4-6-3 double play, sending the game to the 11th inning.

Both teams would go scoreless in both the 11th and 12th innings, before Sansaver would hit the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 13th inning, driving in Bock to win the game 3-2.

The two teams will play again tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. with Christopher George pitching for UH against San Jose State's Frank Esposito.
