Warriors Claim 12th Straight Win with Sweep of Trojans

Zimet, Ching Combine for 27 Kills in Victory

HONOLULU- The University of Hawai`i Warrior volleyball team extended their winning streak to 12 matches as they swept the Trojans of USC at the Stan Sheriff Center, 30-27, 30-23, 30-20, behind outstanding efforts from seniors Eyal Zimet and Tony Ching.

Zimet had a huge night and led the Warriors with 14 kills and hit at a .458 clip. Zimet rocketed four kills in the Warrior's last 10 points of the first game. Zimet added 11 digs for an impressive defensive showing. Fellow senior Ching added 13 kills and two service aces. All-America Costas Theocharidis had seven kills for the night.

Junior middle blocker Joshua Stanhizer iced the Warrior's victory with four of Hawai`i's final five points of game three. Two blocks and two kills in a strong performance.

The Warriors got off to a solid start in game one, putting together a five point run that gave them the early 9-5 lead. Hawai`i later added another three point run, capped off by a servive ace from Theocharidis, to extend their lead to 12-7. USC was able to keep it close despite hitting only .103 for the entire game. The Trojans tied it at 22 late in the game. USC's hopes were dashed as Ching took advantage of a roaring crowd and ripped a kill to put Hawai`i up 24-22. The Men of War didn't look back. Junior Kimo Tuyay set-up Senior Brian Nordberg for the game winning kill to make it 30-27.

UH put up 16 kills and hit .273 in the second game victory. The Warriors were able to take control of second game and maintained a 15-13 lead at the first timeout. Delano Thomas spurred a four point run with a hard kill that put the Warriors up 24-18. Zimet was able to once again come on strong late in the game and posted three of the Warriors last five points and struck home the game winning kill to make it 30-23.

The Men of War struggled early in the thrid game but were able to rebound and post 14 kills while hitting an impressive .480. Despite putting up 15 kills and hitting .321 USC couldn't keep pace with the Warriors late in the match. Stanhiser added two blocks late in the third game and sparked five point to put the Warriors up 26-19. Stanhiser then banged home two straight kills to win the game for Hawai`i, 30-20.

The Men of War host the USC Trojans tomorrow night at the Stan Sheriff Center at 7:00 pm.
