HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (14-11, 1-7 WAC) fell to the Nevada Wolf Pack (11-13, 3-2 WAC) 6-4 in front of a crowd of 2,555 at the Les Murakami Stadium Saturday.
Keahi Rawlins (0-2) got the loss for UH while Brandon Gottier (2-1) picked up the win for Nevada.
Brent Cook went 2-for-4 with one RBI and a run, while Nicholas Ponomarenko was 1-for-3 with one RBI in his return to the UH lineup. Isaac Omura extended his hitting streak to 10 games, going 1-for-4 with one RBI, while Matthew Inouye ended his hitting streak at eight games.
Nevada threatened in the second inning, loading the bases with just one out. But Olsen would get out of it, striking out one batter before Finegan made a great play to end the inning with the 'Bows unharmed. The Wolf Pack would again threaten in the third inning, but this time they would deliver, as Chris Dickerson drove in a run-scoring single to put UN up 1-0.
The Rainbows would respond in the bottom half of the inning as Montgomery would open with a double before Ponomarenko, Omura and Cook would drive runs in give Hawai`i up 3-1.
Nevada would take back a 4-3 lead with a three-run fourth inning. UH came back in the bottom of the sixth inning as Inouye sacrifice flied Cook in to tie the game at four.
The Wolf Pack then got the big hit of the game in the top of the eighth as Erick Streelman blasted a two-run home run to give Nevada the 6-4 victory.
The two teams will close out their series tomorrow with Justin Cayetano pitching against Eddie Bonine.
