HONOLULU--Hawaii gave a strong effort versus No. 18 Arizona, but its upset bid fell short, 66-57, in the fifth-place game of the 25th Annual Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic. The game was tight throughout, until the Wildcats (3-2) pulled away in the final five minutes with a 9-2 run.
UH dropped to 1-4 despite another gutsy performance from junior forward Jade Abele, who finished with 21 points, six rebounds and five assists. Abele, who was named to the all-tournament team, also added three steals.
Hawaii hung with the Wildcats for 35 minutes, but after an Abele bucket with 6:11 left, UH would score just two points the rest of the way. The Rainbow Wahine again struggled from 3-point land, missing 16 of their 18 attempts, including all 11 in the second half.
Arizona shot 52 percent in the second half With top scorer Shawntice Polk shackled by foul trouble, guard Dee-Dee Wheeler picked up the slack, scoring a game-high 21 points, while also adding six assists and four rebounds.
Hawaii, which scored the first five points of the game, shot 48 percent in the first half and the game was knotted, 30-30 at the break. The teams exchanged the lead six times in early part of the second half, until Amy Grzyb's layup put the Wildcats up, 43-41 with 13 minutes remaining. Arizona would not trail again as the Rainbow Wahine, despite another spirited effort, came up empty against a Top 25 team for the 15th straight time.
No. 2 Texas rolled to the tournament championship with a 85-46 rout of Montana. It marked the second Classic championship for the Longhorns who last won it in 1987.
UH next hosts the Territorial Savings Bank Invitational, Dec. 14-16. The Rainbow Wahine will face Saint Mary's Sunday, December 14 at 5 p.m. on the first day of the round-robin tournament.
