Rainbow Warriors Open Season with Loss to Stanford, 5-2

KAPALUA, Maui - The John Nelson era began at the University of Hawai'i with a respectable 5-2 loss to Stanford, Nov. 28, at the Kapalua Resort. Nelson replaced longtime tennis coach Jim Schwitters, who served for 38 years at the school as was the winningest coach in NCAA Division I history.

The Rainbow Warriors (0-1) captured the No. 1 and No. 3 singles positions for their only two wins on the day against the Cardinal, who finished last season ranked No. 3 nationally. At the No. 1 singles court, Ryan Sceats forced Stanford's Phil Sheng in retirement, winning 6-3 in the first and leading 2-0 in the second set. Senior Jarrod Diepraam outlasted Chris Rassmussen at the No. 3 court, in a third set tie-breaker 6-4, 4-6, (10-8).

Nelson came to UH after spending the last 10 seasons at San Diego State, where he guided the Aztecs to the Mountain West Conference championship a year ago.
