HONOLULU--An experienced and talented Maine squad overpowered Hawaii, 75-62, in the consolation game of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort Classic Sunday afternoon at the Stan Sheriff Center. UH dropped to 0-2 on the season, marking the first time under head coach Vince Goo that Hawaii lost its first two games of the year.
UH's youthful lineup, which included playing time from six freshman, could not match up with the Black Bears (1-1), a team that captured the America East title and won 25 games last season. Senior forward Heather Ernest proved unstoppable, registering 32 points and pulling down eight rebounds. April Atuaia was the only player to score in double-figures for UH with 12 points. The team's lone senior also had a team-high six rebounds and two assists.
Maine used a pair of runs to put away the Rainbow Wahine. After UH took an early 10-5 lead, the Black Bears went on an 11-1 run and never looked back. It was just a five-point margin less than four minutes into the second half, but Maine scored 13 unanswered to take control.
For the second game in a row, the Rainbow Wahine fell victim to poor shooting and excellent 3-point shooting by its opponent. UH shot just 32 percent in the game and made just 9-of-31 shots in the first half to fall into a 37-30 hole at the break. The Rainbow Wahine converted on just 2-of-14 from 3-point land. Maine, meanwhile, hit 10 3-pointers, including seven in the first half.
Washington, which defeated Maine on Saturday, captured the tournament championship with a 78-52 win over Lipscomb.
UH next hosts the 25th Annual Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic, Nov. 28-30 at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Wahine will face Hartford in first-round action Friday, Nov. 28 at 4:50 p.m..
