Warriors Bite Bulldogs in 55-28 Win

Box Score

HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i quarterback Timmy Chang threw for 353 yards and career-high five touchdowns and the Warriors capitalized on three Fresno State turnovers in a 55-28 Western Athletic Conference win before 41,153 Saturday night at Aloha Stadium.

Hawai'i (3-3, 2-1 WAC) gained 549 yards of total offense and held Fresno State (3-4, 1-1 WAC) to 382, while sacking Bulldog quarterback Paul Pinegar a season-high five times in the win.

The Warriors wasted no time taking a 7-0 lead after Chang hit Gerald Welch for a 22-yard touchdown to cap a 5-play, 52-yard on the game's opening drive.

Two plays later, Fresno State running back Dwayne Wright mishandled a pitch and UH defensive end Travis LaBoy recovered the fumble that led to a 31-yard field goal by Justin Ayat to give Hawai'i a 10-0 lead less than five minutes into the game.

Fresno State struck back in its next possession when Paul Pinegar found tight end Mark Wood wide open in the middle for a 28-yard touchdown to cap a 3-play, drive that began at the Bulldog 20-yard line.

Chang tied a school record with 15 completions in the first quarter (15-of-20, 129 yards, 1 TD) and broke the record with 28 completions in the first half.

A Warrior fumble led to the Fresno State go-ahead touchdown when Pinegar hit Bernard Berrian for a 19-yard score and a 14-10 lead early in the second quarter.

And then the Warriors took control, erupting for 28 points in the second quarter to take a commanding 38-14 lead at halftime.

The rally started when Chang orchestrated a 74-yard drive that resulted in a 9-yard touchdown pass to Chad Owens who returned after a two-game suspension.

The Bulldogs had an opportunity to tie the game at 17, but Hawai'i's Tony Akpan blocked the 27-yard attempt.

Touchdowns by West Keliikipi, Britton Komine and Michael Brewster kept the Bulldogs out of contention for the rest of the first half.

A third Fresno State turnover led to a 5-yard touchdown pass from Chang to Owens and a 45-14 Hawai'i lead less than six minutes into the third quarter.

The Bulldogs added third quarter touchdown on a 1-yard run by Bryson Sumlin to make it 45-21, and the Warriors converted a fake punt into a 43-yard touchdown pass from Chad Kapanui to David Gilmore with less than five minutes to play.

Next week, the Warriors travel to Ruston, La., to take on Louisiana Tech Oct. 18 at Joe Aillet Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
