RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Rainbow Wahine suffered their second straight loss and had three key players depart with injuries today as they fell, 3-2, at UC Riverside.
The Highlanders emerged from the see-saw battle that saw the two teams trade goals throughout the first 82 minutes of play before Riverside finally broke away with the game-winner in the 89th minute.
Hawaii opened the scoring at 4:23, when Natalie Groenewoud made good on a one-time, right-footed lazer from 25 yards out. Groenewoud received the ball from Hawaii all-time leading scorer Arlene Devitt, who collected a pass at the top of the UC Riverside penalty box and then spun and passed to a streaking Groenewoud.
The Wahine struck again at the 76th minute mark, when Krystalynn Ontai's corner kick glanced off a Riverside defender into the net. The goal is Ontai's first of the season.
Wahine starters Sasha Araya-Schraner and Seline Williams and central midfielder Erin Quattromani suffered leg injuries that required them to be removed from action.
Hawaii returns home tomorrow to ready for this weekend's Outriger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic, which also features No. 3 UCLA and San Francisco.
