HONOLULU - Rainbow Wahine junior midfielder
Mia Moe celebrated her birthday in grand fashion, netting the game-winning goal to lead Hawai`i to a 4-0 victory in a rematch with visiting Weber State at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Moe, a transfer from Loyola Marymount, registered the match's first goal at 26:24, when she ran onto Erin Quattromani's free kick and drilled a right-footed shot that richocheted off of the goal post and into the net past Wildcat keeper Kandice Golar. Quattromani hit a strong, right-footed diagonal on the free kick, which took one hop before it landed at the feet of Moe well inside the Weber State penalty box.
Quattromani posted her second assist of the evening at 33:32, when she sent a looping centering pass onto the head of an awaiting Carmen Calpo, who flicked her header past Golar for her third goal of the season. Quattromani set-up the score by chasing down the deflection of a save of a Hawai`i shot near the end line. From there the senior transfer controlled, and shook free of her defender before sending the ball across the goal mouth to Calpo.
Hawai`i squeezed in another score just 18 seconds before the intermission when Arlene Devitt finished a well executed attack for her sixth goal of the year. Rainbow defender Jessica Uecker initiated the attack when she sent a long diagonal pass to Joelle Sugai on the left flank. Sugai cut toward the goal and drove about 30 yards before slotting a well-paced ball to Devitt, who was running alongside her. The assist was Uecker's first, and Sugai's third of the season.
Tia Medeiros benefitted from her own passing to cap the match's scoring at 57:54. Medeiros, a junior from Kahului, Maui, created the scoring chance when she collected the ball just past midfield and sent a long ball to the corner flag for Devitt. Devitt chased it down, cut in towards goal and cracked a low, hard right-footer that was deflected by Wildcat keeper Mekanie Stratford. The deflection rolled across the goal mouth toward Medeiros, who slid feet first at the ball and pushed the ball into the net with the toe of her right foot. It was her first collegiate score.
Hawai`i keepers Mahie Atay and Erin Chow combined to post their team's first shutout of the season. Atay manned the net for the first half, posting a save. Chow played well in her first action of the season, posting five saves in the effort.
The Rainbow Wahine will host their annual Alumnae Game this coming Saturday before opening their Western Athletic Conference season on Oct. 11 and 13, when they host Tulsa and Rice.
