Hawaii Soccer Rolls to 6-1 Win Over Long Island

Box Score

HONOLULU - The Rainbow Wahine striker duo of Arlene Devitt and Natasha Kai helped account for four goals as Hawai`i outshot Long Island, 42-to-7 to race to a 6-1 victory in the opening match of the OHANA Hotels & Resorts Shootout at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Devitt collected two goals on the match to up her school career goals record to 24. The two-time All-WAC selection netted Hawai`i's first score of the night just nine minutes and eight seconds into the first half when she hit on a left-footed shot from close range. Kai initiated the attack when she centered the ball to fellow freshman Carmen Calpo near the top of the LIU penalty box. Calpo chest trapped the ball and then slotted it in to a streaking Devitt, who beat Blackbirds keeper Holly Nixon from about eight yeards out. Both Kai and Calpo were credited with assists on the score.

Devitt's second goal came at 60:43, when the junior from Kapaa, Kauai ran onto a well, paced through ball from Tia Medeiros. Devitt took the ball and then cut left to avoid on-rushing LIU keeper Mary Jaeger before pushing her easy left-footed shot into the open net.

Kai, who set a new school match record with 14 shots on the night, led all players with five offensive points on two goals and an assist. Kai's first goal came at 54:56 when she collected a long, diagonal cross from Sasha Araya-Schraner inside the LIU penalty box and then cracked a left-footed shot into the net. Araya-Schraner earned an assist on the play.

Kai's second score off an assist from Wahine reserve Kelly McCloskey. McCloskey put Kai in position to score with a long diagonal pass that bounced into the Blackbird penalty box. Kai beat Jaeger to the ball and flicked it over the on-rushing keeper's head to post her fifth goal of the year. The assist was McCloskey's first as a Wahine.

Hawai`i senior co-captain Wanette Miyashiro posted the game-winner at 44:08, when she ran onto a deflection of Wendi Young's shot and slammed a right-footed laser that crept in just under the upper corner of the goal frame. The goal is the first of Miyashiro's career. Young was credited with an assist on the goal.

Tasha Hagan capped Hawai`i's scoring when she netted her first goal of the year at 88:51. Pam Fong sent a through ball to Hagan at midfield, allowing her to break into space and beat Jaeger to make it, 6-0, Hawai`i.

On the match the Wahine set a new program high with 42 shots. The previous record was 30, against Hawai`i Pacific on Oct. 20, 1996.

The OHANA Hotels & Resorts Shootout continues Saturday, with Long Island meeting Long Beach State at 7:00 p.m. The Wahine return to action on Monday against Long Beach State at 5:00 p.m.
