HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i women's soccer team received strong performances from strikers
Carmen Calpo and
Arlene Devitt, but could not overcome a scrappy San Francisco squad that netted the game-winner in the final minute of regulation to post the 3-2 victory in day two of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic.
Hawai`i all-time leading scorer Devitt put the Wahine on the board at 39:23 to keep the Wahine within striking range of the Dons, who netted two scores to take an early 2-0 lead. Calpo initiated the scoring drive when she centered the ball to fellow freshman Natasha Kai, who sent a through ball to Devitt. From there, Devitt set-up a left footer that raced past San Francisco keeper Jennifer Orantes. Both Calpo and Kai were credited with assists on the score.
The Kapaa, Kauai native came-off the bench tonight to ignite the Wahine attack, leading all players with seven shots. Devitt leads Hawai`i with seven points on three goals and an assist this season.
Calpo scored the equalizer at 68:54, when she hit a left footed shot into an open net. Wahine sophomore defender Krystalynn Ontai began the attack by centering the ball to midfielder Mia Moe, who touched the ball over to Calpo in space as Orantes rushed-off of her line. Ontai and Moe recorded assists on the goal.
Calpo's score evened the match and set the stage for Liz Sylva's last minute game-winner. Sylva scored when Noelle Langston's close range shot was saved on a leaping effort by Hawai`i keeper Mahie Atay and rebounded to her feet. Sylva's goal at 89:07 gave the Rainbow Wahine their first home loss of the year.
The Outrigger Soccer Classic concludes tomorrow with host Hawai`i taking-on fifth-ranked UCLA, at 5:00 p.m. Hawai`i Standard Time. The match will be televised live, state-wide, on KFVE, "The Home Team."
