Oronoz Pitches UH Past Tulsa to Earn a Split

HONOLULU - Hawai`i starting pitcher Sheri Oronoz tossed a complete-game shutout in the second game of the doubleheader leading UH past Tulsa, 3-0. The Rainbow Wahine dropped the opener, 4-2.

Oronoz (18-12) faced the minimum batters (21) in the seven-inning contest allowing only one single to Crissy Strimple in the second inning before erasing her on a double play.

The Rainbow Wahine got all three runs in the second off Tulsa starter Jenny Magill (20-7).

Stacey Porter led off with a double down the left field line and advances to third on April Crowell's single to center. Marie Jackson came in to pinch-run for Crowell and stole second. Stacey Ritter drew a walk before Tracie Uchima lifted a fly ball to left for a sacrifice fly scoring Porter, but Jackson got caught off second too far and was caught in a run down. Denise Dahlberg then doubled home Ritter to make it 2-0. Jennifer Tandarich, one of three seniors bidding farewell today, then had an RBI single to center scoring Dahlberg.

In the first game, Tulsa jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on four hits and an error.

UH would come back with single runs in the third and fifth innings on RBI hits by Kate Judd and Stacie Hirano to tie the score.

Melissa Coogan (12-8) ran into trouble in the seventh and gave up a two-run double to deep left for the final outcome.

Tulsa's Ami Day (20-7) notched the win for the Golden Hurricane.

Hawai`i finished the regular season 35-25 overall and 15-9 in the Western Athletic Conference.

Tomorrow, Sunday, the NCAA Tournament field of 48 is announced on ESPNEWS at 3 p.m. HST.
