Tulsa, Okla.--The No. 8 seeded University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine tennis team faced off against No. 9 seeded San Jose State in the Western Athletic Conference tournament at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, Friday, but fell short in the first round, 4-2. Hawai`i ends its season with a 6-17 overall record while the Spartans advance to the second round to face top-seeded Fresno State.
Rainbow Wahine Stacy Hakikawa and Justine Boutet managed two victories for Hawai`i at the No. 2 and 5 positions. Hakikawa, a junior from Wahiawa, closed the match in two sets 6-2, 6-2, while freshman Boutet had no problem with her opponent as well, 6-0, 6-1.
Birgitte Brubakken and Kimberly Curtis took their matches to a deciding third set after splitting the first two. Brubakken lead early in the No. 3 position winning the first set, 6-2, but wouldn’t hold the lead as SJSU’s Ana Lukner took the next two, 6-3, 6-1. Curtis came back to take the second set in her match, 6-4, after falling in the first, 6-3 to Anna Nordell in the No. 6 position. Nordell edged Curtis, 7-6 in the third.
