RENO, Nev. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine tennis team gained a win over San Jose State, 6-1, Saturday but would fall to UTEP, 5-2, Sunday, at the Caughlin Tennis Club, getting their first taste of Western Athletic Conference competition this season. Freshman Paige Mainor gave a dazzling performance as she won all her matches, singles and doubles, on the road.

On Saturday Hawai`i would jump to an early 1-0 lead and would never look back as they took five of the six singles matches to acquire a 6-1 win over the Spartans. Stacy Hakikawa, Polina Kravets and Mainor gave unblemished performances in singles action blanking their opponents 6-0, 6-0.

Sunday posed another challenge as the Rainbow Wahine had to battle high winds and the UTEP Miners. In doubles action, UTEP would take two of the three doubles matches to give them a 1-0 lead. Hawai`i’s Lauren Fitzgerald and Mainor teamed up for an 8-4 win over Miners Tea Spirta and Adriana Boykova, avoiding a doubles sweep.

The Miners continued their dominance taking another four matches in singles action. However Hawai`i wouldn’t go down without a fight. Leading the way was Mainor once again as she defeated Elisa Bjorklund in the No. 5 position, 6-4, 6-3. Junior Polina Kravets also gave a great performance as she went to a 6-2, 6-2 route over Spirta in the No. 4 position.

The Rainbow Wahine return to the Islands Monday to prepare for the WAC Tournament scheduled for April 26-18 in Tulsa, Okla.
