HONOLULU – Hawai'i senior
Dejan Miladinovic made his last regular-season home match a memorable one, leading all players with eight blocks and a .591 attack percentage with a season-high 14 kills. But the efforts of the 6-foot-7 middle blocker would not be enough to lead the second-ranked Warriors to victory, as BYU posted the straight-set sweep, 30-27, 30-28, 30-27, before a crowd of 7,720 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Miladinovic kept the Warrior attack rolling through the first two sets, putting-down six kills in 13 attempts to register a .385 hitting percentage, making him the only Hawai'i attacker to hit over .300 through sets one and two. With his eight blocks on the night, the Kraljevo, Serbia native finished the regular-season with a 1.89 blocks per game average, giving him the national lead for the second consecutive season.
Libero Vernon Podlewski, the other half of the Hawai'i senior class, had a match-high nine digs in his final regular-season home match. Podlewski, who earned All-MPSF first-team honors last year, finished the regular campaign with 2.09 digs per game average to lead the Warriors this season.
Junior outside hitter Costas Theocharidis added a team-high 15 kills in 37 swings, while Tony Ching put-down 10 kills of his own to spark the Warrior attack.
Hawai'i, who clinched second place and home court for the first round of next weekend's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with their victory last night, will be hosting No. 12 Long Beach State (13-17, 9-13 MPSF), who finished the year seventh in the league. That match is scheduled for Sat., Apr. 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center. Ticket information will be announced when the MPSF officially announces seeding for the league's tournament tomorrow.
