SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- The UC Santa Barbara men’s tennis team fought off any late rally by Hawaii as the Gauchos edge the Warriors, 4-3, at the UCSB’s RecCen Courts Tuesday afternoon.
The Gauchos got off to an early lead by sweeping the doubles competition to give them a 1-0 advantage. Warriors Lincoln Leeder and Malino Oda forced UCSB’s Carlos Palencia and Marcin Kosakowski to take the match to nine points before ending the close match in the No. 1 position.
The Warriors battled back in singles play led by seniors Jorge Gonzalez and Lincoln who both needed two sets to close their match in the No. 5 and 6 positions, respectively. Junior Malino Oda needed an extra set to claim a victory in his match in the No. 3 position as he defeated Mike Placek, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. However, the singles split (3-3) wasn’t enough for the Warriors as they stumble to 13-8 on the season.
The Warriors look to gain momentum as they enter the Anteater Classic March 29-30 hosted by UC Irvine.
