HONOLULU – The Washington State women’s tennis team, ranked No. 34 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Rankings, swept Hawai`i, 7-0, Thursday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. WSU took all six singles matches and all three doubles matches in the dual meet.
The highlight for the Rainbow Wahine (5-13) was the play of top singles player Lauren Fitzgerald, who took No. 68-ranked Erica Perkins to three games before falling, 6-2, 6-7 (1), 6-0. Perkins controlled the tempo of play forcing numerous errors by Fitzgerald. However it was the Hawai`i freshman who proved to be the stronger player, often keeping Perkins off balance with her strong two-handed backhand.
In other singles action, No. 2 singles Stacy Hakikawa battled tough in the first game to No. 45-ranked Stacy McKenna, before succumbing, 7-5, 6-0.
The doubles team of Perkins and McKenna, ranked No. 16 nationally, did not compete in the dual meet.
