LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Sophomore setter
Kimo Tuyay dished-out 40 assists and led the second-ranked Warriors to a .383 team attack percentage as Hawaii recorded its sixth consecutive road win of the season and remained in first place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with a 30-27, 30-19, 30-26 sweep of USC before 400 at North Gym.
Tuyay, the 2001 MPSF Co-Freshman of the Year, kept the Warrior attackers happy, as four different Hawaii starters hit over .350 on the match. The San Diego, Calif. Native also put-up three blocks and recorded two kills of his own in a well-rounded effort. With Tuyay leading the attack, the Warriors committed only 15 hitting errors in 81 swings on the night. Tuyay was most effective in game two, when Hawaii hit an incredible .722, with no attacking errors in 18 attempts.
All-American outside hitter Costas Theocharidis helped the Warriors get off to a hot start in game one, putting down seven kills in 10 attempts. Theocharidis capped a fine series against USC, recording a match-high 16 kills on a .367 hitting percentage while also leading all players with eight digs.
Junior captain Eyal Zimet, who missed the series opener due to illness, returned to the starting lineup to record eight kills and hit .385 in 13 swings. Senior middle Dejan Miladinovic chipped-in with five kills (.500) while recording a match-high four total blocks. Jose Delgado was a fourth Hawaii starter to hit well on the night, hitting .462 with eight kills on 13 attempts.
On the match, the Warriors out hit the Trojans, .383 to .117, as USC committed 25 attacking errors in 94 total attempts.
Hawaii now returns home to the 50th state for a week before making their second of three California road trips in the month of March. The Warriors will face UC Santa Barbara (Mar. 12 & 13) and Cal State Northridge (Mar. 15 & 16) on their next road swing.
