SCHWITTERS NETS NO. 800 AT HAWAI`I

HONOLULU – Longtime University of Hawai`i men’s tennis coach Jim Schwitters earned win No. 800, Tuesday afternoon, as the Warriors (11-6) defeated Oklahoma, 6-1, at the UH Tennis Complex. Schwitters, the winningest coach in collegiate tennis, has an 800-393-8 record in 36 years of coaching the men’s team. The victory also added to his NCAA-best 1,301-589-15 overall combined (men’s and women’s) record.

“Eight hundred is just a number,” Schwitters said after the match. “I don’t hit a ball or win a match. It’s a tribute to the guys who want to excel and want to win. This win reminds me of all the great teams and it’s an important event. Over the years, my assistant coaches put in a lot of effort and get nothing out of it. They deserve a lot of credit for my success. I’m proud of the way we played today and it was a total team effort.”

After dropping two of three doubles matches to fall behind 0-1, the Warriors rebounded by sweeping all six singles contests. No. 3 singles Malino Oda led off the Warrior sweep by easily defeating Ollivier Monferran, 6-1, 6-0. Jorge Gonzalez continued UH’s dominance with a 6-2, 6-0 sweep of Olivier Girardot in No. 5 singles. In the top singles position, UH’s Reginaldo Moralejo fought off Sebastian Revol, 6-3, 6-2 to give the Warriors a 3-1 lead.

With just three matches to play, Francisco Brignole clinched the milestone victory for Schwitters with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Matt Ogle in No. 4 singles. Justin Melascino and Lincoln Leeder rounded out the UH singles sweep with victories over Chris Mitchell, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (6), and Alex Nomicos, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4, in the No. 2 and 6 positions, respectively.

Among UH coaches, Schwitters ranks first in total victories ahead of legendary baseball coach Les Murakami (1,079).
