The University of Hawai`i Warrior tennis team (8-6) earned themselves another victory in sweeping fashion as they blanked Navy, 6-0, at the UH Tennis Complex Friday.
The Hawai`i attack was lead by junior Malino Oda, who was the first to close his match against Chris McGrath in the No. 3 position, 6-0, 6-2. In the last week of competition the junior is on a roll, winning four of his five singles matches and all three of his doubles matches paired with senior Lincoln Leeder.
Leeder was caught in a battle with Navy’s Joe Weisberger, coming from behind after losing the first set 4-6. Leeder would prevail with his tough serving, taking the second set, 6-1, and the tie-breaker, 11-9.
Hawai`i’s Justin Menolascino would also have to take the match to a tie-breaker after winning the first set 6-2 and falling in the second, 5-7. The Warrior would battle in the third but come out on top, 10-6.
Junior Regie Moralejo would out maneuver Navy’s Cameron Lickle with strategically placed shots that would leave Lickle frustrated. Moralejo would win the match in two sets, 6-3, 6-2.
Also having a strong showing was Francisco Brignole and Jorge Gonzalez. Brignole closed his match, 6-2, 6-2, but Gonzalez would do one better, 6-1, 6-2.
Next up for the Warriors is a doubleheader with Wisconsin-Green Bay and Idaho March 18 at the UH Tennis Complex. Matches are scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively.
